English: Lithuanian and Latvian meta-linguistic commentaries (MCs) with Subjunctive Mood kaip (pa)sakytų... / kā teiktu (sacītu)... (‘one would/might say’) are chosen to be investigated in the present article . These commentaries always draw attention of an MC user not only to the information of a phrase to be commented, but also to the linguistic expression, distinction, and style. The examples were collected from newspaper texts as wel as from the Internet. The purpose of the MCs mentioned is to comment, assess a situation, action (process) and/or speech (what is being said) from various positions of speakers: different speakers may express the same thought by using different words, sayings, even by citing thoughts pronounced by other people , etc. (these inserts may be singled out graphically in a text – put in quotation-marks or written in italic). Such MCs require some addition, specification, even though an appropriate impersonal formula kaip sakoma (‘as the saying goes’) is used in Lithuanian, too (in Latvian it would correspond to kā tiek teikts and sometimes to kā saka). Actually, these additions to MCs are an interesting object of sociolinguistic research – often, such construction is complemented by titles of a person, period, etc., i.e. a specification which makes an utterance concrete, more comprehensive, as wel as provides an emotional colouring (especially when associations with an interesting person or a specific situation when the saying was pronounced for the first time and later had spread widely are created). All investigated MCs according to additions to the formula kaip (pa)sakytų... / kā teiktu (sacītu)... were relatively divided into 3 groups: 1) individuals with regard to their activities, profession, position, etc.; 2) individuals according to their nationality or place of residence; 3) individuals with regard to their age or by underlining a particular period when a certain phrase could be used. Often, the purpose of MCs is to highli ght Lithuanian / Latvian or, in contrast, foreign character as wel as different language of a saying (it is especially characteristic to MCs of the 2nd group); a rather wide circle of famous people , including fiction characters, are mentioned (the 1st group of MCs), among them, thoughts of foreign authors or their characters are used. Sometimes, intellectualisation of speech is observed, e.g. international words or terms are used as competitors (such cases are noticed in all MC groups). |
